    • Awards Won- NoneGenre- fictions Illustrations- The animals that are in the zoo all have the same sad and lonely expression. There is a great picture where it shows the animals in Africa and the animals in the zoo. In this picture you can see such a huge difference in life, and lack of life. My views- I originally picked this book off the shelf because elephants are my favorite animals. Then I started to look at the book and saw that there was a sad element to it, but as all children's books do, [...]

    • Cock, N. (2013). The girl and the elephant. Berkeley, CA: Tricycle Press. A little girl enjoys going to the zoo and seeing the different animals. She becomes really good friends with an elephant. Then one day she comes to visit him and the caretaker says that he had been sent back to Africa. This makes the little girl really sad. Then a bird called a swift, finds he and ask why she is sad, she tells it about the elephant going back to Africa, and the swift agrees to go to Africa to find the elep [...]

    • Don't know what it is about this book - but rarely have I come across such a sense of longing in a book for preschoolers. A few of the drawings made my heart soar, and the phrasing is unusual. It doesn't have an American feeling at all, but feels like some very simple poetry translated from another story. It's matter of fact and simple in wording, but there is strength in what's not said. My 28 month old loves this one and asks for it daily - I'll have to buy a copy as we borrow it from the libr [...]

    • One of the most aching children's books I have ever read. My eldest daughter had me read it to her nightly for months on end. It reads like a poem, with moody illustrations to match the desire that drives this story. Its about friendship, love, and a determination to take a giant leap to be with one you miss. In this way it is a coming of age story, and a story if liberation and the pursuit of happiness. I recommend you read it slowly, airily, as a poem, to your child.

    • A girl becomes good friends with the elephant she visits at the zoo, and when he returns to Africa, she wonders if she will ever see him again.

    • This may be one of my all-time favorite picture books for girls (or boys). It is beautifully paced and illustrated and makes me all fluttery every time I read it.

    • My daughter loves elephants and this is one of her favorite books. She's two and I can't describe how fun it is to hear her say elephant.

    • great illustrations, but there were 2 occasions where I felt like I had missed a page. the story seemed disjointede way an essay feels before editing.
