      Younghusband was elected President of the Royal Geographic Society in 1919, and two years later became Chairman of the Mount Everest Committee which was set up in 1921 to co ordinate the reconnaissance of Mount Everest 6 He actively encouraged climbers, including George Mallory, to attempt the first ascent of Mount Everest, and they followed the same initial route as the earlier Tibet Mission.

    • This book was published in 1936 before the successful attempt of Hilary and Norgay and discusses several of the early attempts on Everest as well as climbs on other mountains such as the fateful expedition on Nanga Parbat in 1934. It goes on to discuss the chances of Everest being conquered in the future. Also touched on are the personalities of the Himalayan people, the natural flora and fauna of the area and the holiness of the Himalayas and it's meaning to Hindus and the possibility of findin [...]


    • This book was published in 1935, before the first successful climb to the top of Everest. The first part of the book describes the initial attempts to summit Everest and speculates on the challenges that would need to be overcome. It then goes on to describe attempts (successful and otherwise) to climb other great mountains. If the book stopped there I would have enjoyed it.
