    • Choices of the HeartThe Midwives Book 3By Laurie Alice EakesEsther Cherrett is running. Running from her home in Seabourne. Running from the accusations. And running from the pain. Running to protect her family from the shame. Esther Cherrett is heading into the mountainous regions of the Appalachians to become a teacher, leaving behind her calling to be a midwife and a healer. But Esther is about to walk into a new unknown danger - a family feud that could be restarted at any moment. Will Esthe [...]

    • My thoughts: I previously read Laurie Alice Eakes' book A Flight of Fancy and reviewed it here on Chat With Vera. Click to read review. However, reading Choices of the Heart is a totally different reading experience in my opinion. This third book in Eakes' "midwife" series is set in the isolated mountains of Virginia in 1842. Esther Cherrett leaves her home of affluence in coastal Virginia under cover of night to obtain a position in the mountains as teacher for the uneducated and very isolated [...]

    • The mountain setting, the family feud with the heroine caught in the middle, the love triangle - the basic elements of this story (despite being used time and time again), as well as the colorful cover, drew me in and begged me to give it a try. Similar to my experience with the first book in "The Midwives" series (Lady in the Mist), I discovered some great things about Choices of the Heart, even if it didn't completely captivate me as much as I initially hoped. One aspect of the book that intrig [...]

    • Review on my blog: christianbookshelfreviewsChoices of the Heart is the third book in Laurie Alice Eakes' The Midwives series and a good read. I was a little confused about who everyone was and what was going on in the beginning of this book, and I think part of that was due to the fact that I only read book two of this series, Heart's Safe Passage, prior to Choice of the Heart. While I did still enjoy the book a lot, I wish I had read A Lady in the Mist - mainly because it is Esther's parents' [...]

    • The intrigue of who would win the heart of this honest-to-goodness heroine, Esther, had me gripped from page one. I thoroughly enjoyed this third of the Midwife series. What I especially liked were the realistic blurs between what appears the bad guy or woman in the story, and that by going beneath the veneer of a person, you find a troubled heart.I think this is my favorite of the Midwife series because of that fact. In real life, the lines between hero and villian are not so clearly defined. W [...]

    • Great Historical RomanceFrom the very first page, "Choices of the Heart" grabs the reader with another well-written story from the imagination of Laurie Alice Eakes. Set for the most part in the mountains of Appalachia during the settling of the frontier, the author weaves together the strands of love, betrayal, and loss to recount a clean, decidedly Christian, tale that won't let go. Once again, Laurie Alice Eakes has written a book that kept this reviewer up well past her bedtime. Loved it. Bu [...]

    • A very interesting and different story. The lead lady is stubborn. Once he gets an idea into her headAt the beginning I wasn't sure how much I was going to like the plot or maybe I should say plots--OR the author's writing style. The scenes were beautifully presented and theorem read--I was hooked.

    • Review can also be seen on blog here crossromance/20Choices of the Heart was another first with a new author for me. Once again, I read this title the third in a trilogy without having read the other two. Perhaps I really ought to start reading series at the beginning as intended! The story itself was good enough, with a fairly original concept and some interesting characters. It was not hard to sympathise with poor Esther, who it seemed really could not have done anything that bad, yet was effec [...]

    • Title: Choices of the HeartAuthor: Laurie Alice Eakes Pages: 384Year: 2013Publisher: Revell While it is a fictitious story, the truth about feuds in different parts of the world and for many reasons is true. The author lets us know that the feuds between families came from across the ocean. Also, many feuds in the Appalachian Mountains started after and as a result of the Civil War. The novel is set after the Civil War timeframe, but the feuding in the book is depicted in the story due to reveng [...]

    • Esther Cherrett has a problem. She can’t find a man to suit her tastes in her hometown. She’s learned the art of flirtation, and has broken hearts. Now she has a reputation around town, with the potential to ruin the good name of her parents. Instead of sticking it out, she runs away in the dead of night without any idea of what she’s getting herself into. The family feud was the selling point for me when I first read the description of Choices of the Heart. I had in my mind the Hatfield-Mc [...]

    • Midwifery is such an interesting and enthralling topic to read about and study. Laurie Alice Eakes's series really brought the trials and tribulations of 19th century midwives front and center. With the last installment in The Midwives series we once again meet a young midwife, this time one who has all but given up practicing because of a scandal, all to protect her family's reputation. The lack of birthing room drama in Choices of the Heart disappointed me but overall I'd recommend it if you e [...]

    • I have to admit up front, this is the first book from Laurie Alice Eakes I didn't really care for. I have read her other books, flew through them to be exact, and this one had some things I didn't like. I read all of it, she still kept my attention, but there were a couple things I think could have been left out. This is the third book in the Midwives series and has to deal with Dominick and Tabitha's daughter. Esther has followed her mothers footsteps and also learned how to become a midwife. Bu [...]

    • I loved this book! I couldn’t put it down. Esther Cherrett was trained as a midwife by her mother, and she is proud to follow in the family tradition. But then the worst happens, accusations fly, and scandal threatens to shame her family. Esther flees Seabourne and goes to the western mountains of Virginia to take a position as a teacher. There she hopes to find peace and anonymity. Instead she finds herself being courted by Zach and Griff, two friends who are trying to end the deadly feuding [...]

    • This is the first book by Laurie Alice Eakes I’ve read, and I thoroughly enjoyed her story and her writing style. She expertly uses her talent for painting vivid word pictures, both physical and emotional, so you feel like you are there in the midst of the adventure. I particularly enjoyed the historical aspect of the time period and the profession of midwifery. I like the way she hints at the mystery and suspense without giving too much away early in the book.Choices of the Heart is a captiva [...]

    • "Choices of the Heart" is the third book in The Midwives series and takes place in Virginia in 1842. Esther Cherrett finds herself in the midst of something that forces her to head for the mountains of Virginia and take a job teaching, hoping that she can leave her problems behind. Instead she finds herself smack dab in the middle of a family feud between the Tollivers and the Brooks, added to that is the fact that Griff Tolliver as well as Zach Brooks wants to court her. • CHOICES OF THE HEART is the third installment in the Midwives Series by Laurie Alice Eakes. Though it wasn’t as good as HEART’S SAFE PASSAGE, it was still enjoyable.Esther Cherrett is a trained midwife ready to follow in her mother’s footsteps. But when she becomes the center of a town scandal, she flees her home and takes the job of a teacher in the Virginia mountains. Once there, she realizes she has found herself in the middle of an ongoing family feud, one that has already taken too ma [...]

Denying her calling and hoping to save her family from a shameful scandal, Esther accepts a job as a teacher in the rural mountains of western Virginia. She had no way of knowing that she'd land right into the middle of a family feud and find two young men on opposite sides wishing to court her. • Wow. This one was good. I’ve enjoyed some of Laurie Alice Eakes novels, but Choices of the Heart was definitely the best. Esther, the main character, is the niece of the couple from the previous book in this series, and the daughter of the couple from the first book. It was fun to see the names and reunite with Rafe and Phoebe; and hear more about Dominic and Tabitha as well. Tabitha and Phoebe are midwives. It’s a traditional, passed down from woman to woman in these families. Esther has be [...]

    • Ah the title is correctwhat are the choices of our heart? The story takes place 1840 Virginia, a very different world than today. Young Esther Cherrett is a young woman what has been rather spoiled during her life, she is the only daughter. Her father is a Pastor, and her mother is a Midwife, who learned her skills from her mother and has passed them down to Esther. Esther does have a big probleme is a terrible flirt, and when things go awry, she is blamed. No one will believe she is innocente h [...]

    • I’m an Appalachian girl, born and raised in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, so when I was given opportunity to read Laurie Alice Eakes new novel, Choices of the Heart, I quickly volunteered. After all, she was writing about people who were from my home and culture. I had to check in on how those folks were portrayed. JI was not disappointed. As is usual for Laurie’s books, her historical detail is well-done and beautifully blended into the landscape of the story. I have to say that her [...]

    • In 2011 I was first introduced to the writing of Laurie Alice Eakes, and since then I have become quite a fan. I really enjoy all of her stories and I'm excited as some of her backlist is becoming available on Kindle so that I can even go back and read otherwise difficult to find stories. The Midwives series has been an interesting reading experience. Lady in the Mist was fabulous (minus the non character-match cover image) and Heart's Safe Passage was filled with incredible characters and perso [...]

    • This book is certainly not a typical romance. First, I loved the Appalachian setting. I think the author did a great portrayal of the people and their life living in the mountains. I've read books on this subject and it matched up to what I've read. My issue with this 'romance' is that it didn't read much like a romance. There's a love triangle which I didn't expect. The heroine appears to like two men who are cousins. And just when you think she's showing a preference for one over the other the [...]
